The design, construction and maintenance of ships flying the Belgian flag must comply with international, European and national regulations. These include structural, mechanical and electrical requirements.

Classification societies are government-recognised inspection and survey organisations. They are, among other things, responsible for the certification of ships complying with international, European and national requirements. This also includes safety requirements for hull, machinery and electrical and control installations.

Organisations recognised in Belgium are authorised to conduct statutory inspections, audits and certification in respect of seagoing ships flying the Belgian flag. This is done in accordance with the Working Agreement where delegations are laid down in the Work Matrix.
