- You are no longer in possession of your vehicle and do not intend to register another vehicle,
- You want a personalised registration plate,
- You reregister your vehicle under a new registration plate and do not wish to keep your old one,

In practice
To request the deregistration of your plate, you have 2 options :
1. Shipping by post
Send your packaged registration plate (= the official plate with the DIV logo, i.e. the rear plate) by post in an envelope or parcel to the shipping address: DIV – 1212 Brussels.
If necessary, you can fold the registration plate in half to make it fit into a A4 envelope. Do not cut the plate: it must remain in one piece!
Make sure your shipment is sufficiently stamped. Please note: Unpackaged registration plates and/or insufficiently stamped shipments will not be forwarded to the DIV. The plate will not be deregistered.
The proof of deposit issued to the customer by the postal operator for the delivery of a parcel containing the number plate does not constitute proof of the effective deregistration of the number plate on that date. The deregistration date is the date of receipt of the envelope/parcel by the DIV. If a plate needs to be deregistered by the end of the month, it must be sent 5 calendar days before the end of the month.
In the case of loss or theft during shipment of the plate, proof of deposit from the postal operator is not sufficient : you must report to the police to file a statement of involuntary loss. The police will report the plate, which means that it will be automatically and immediately deleted from the DIV application. The police will issue you with a certificate of loss or theft, which will serve as proof for the SPF.
2. Deposit at the FPS Mobility and Transport
Deposit your unpackaged registration plate (= the official plate with the DIV logo, i.e. the rear plate):
- in the collection box at the DIV counter in Brussels, – City Atrium, Vooruitgangstraat 56 Rue du Progrès – 1210 Brussels, accessible during the opening hours of the counter.
- in the collection box located in the entrance hall of the FPS Mobility and Transport – same address in Brussels. This collection box is accessible, on working days, from Monday to Friday, from 8:30 to 18:00.
Please note: For security reasons, it is not allowed to deposit plates to be deregistered in any of the provincial DIV branch offices.
The deregistration date is the date on which the plate was deposited.
Advice for large companies
If you have a lot of number plates to deregister on a weekly or monthly basis, you can use large parcels or euro standard grey plastic bins with lids (dimensions 600x400x120mm or 600x400x150 mm) containing up to 80 plates and send them to the FPS Mobility and Transport, postal address: DIV - 1212 Brussels.
You can collect the plastic bins on your next visit when you come to deliver new bins.

For general questions about deregistration
Please send any questions about deregistration of your number plate via this online form.
Return your registration plate as soon as possible
In the case of postal delivery, it is advisable to send the plate 5 working days before the end of the month if you no longer wish to re-register a vehicle. In this way, road tax can be stopped from the first day of the month in which the plate is cancelled.
Advantages of deregistration
Deregistration puts an end to road tax and enables insurance cover to be terminated.
To know the status of your deregistration request
Please visit our website “My vehicle, my plate”: enter the registration plate and click on ‘request status’. You will then see if your registration plate is still registered or has been “deregistered”.
Please note : The DIV no longer sends deregistration certificates, but you can download and print a deregistration certificate from the ‘My vehicle, my number plate’ page on our website.
Further information
You have sold your vehicle and it is registered under the name of the buyer[ML1] : you will receive a deletion notice via bpost and you have a period of 4 months to:
- either have your plate deregistered through bpost;
- or register another vehicle under the same plate if it is a European format plate (7 characters).
If you fail to meet this deadline, your registration plate will be automatically deregistered by the DIV.
If you live in the Brussels region, deleting your number plate (category M1) entitles you, under certain conditions, to the Bruxell'Air mobility subsidy. The aim of this allowance is to support modal shift.
In case of loss or theft of the plate
Go to the Police to report the loss or theft.
The Police will issue a certificate of involuntary dispossession of the registration plate. The Police will issue an alert for your registration plate, which means that it is automatically deregistered.
Your registration plate will be deregistered on the date of the alert by the Police.
The certificate of involuntary dispossession issued by the Police does NOT need to be sent to the DIV.
